Thawing Food

Are the icecaps thawing faster than your frozen casserole?

The Bite:
Then help a polar bear out by thawing out your food in the fridge the night before you need it. Or, if you're in a bind, zap it in the microwave - it saves more water and energy than running it under hot water.
The Benefits:
  • Save time.
  • Save water. Regular faucets use 3-5 gallons per minute, so thawing out that chicken breast can drain a tank fast.
  • Save about $25 per year on your water bill.
Personally Speaking:
Before this tip, Jen had no idea that people used water to thaw food. (Her freezer's always full of vegan corn dogs and Amy's pizzas...neither of which lends itself to being thawed under a running faucet anyway.)
Wanna Try:
  • Stick food in the fridge the night before or get acquainted with the defrost feature on your microwave. (And yes, we saw the thing about the plants dying 'cuz they were fed microwaved water. Great concept, but not true. We're talking ice caps here.)

Cocktail Fact

Found on the label of some Swanson frozen dinners: "Serving Suggestion: Defrost."

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters quit using running water to thaw food, in a year we'll save enough fresh water to fill 1,664,000 bathtubs.
